‘Armenia: A Brief History’

Welcome to the home of the Final Fore, the most prestigious amateur golfing event in the world. Held in Myrtle Beach, SC during the first week of April each year (scheduled to coincide with the NCAA Men's Final Four of basketball), Final Fore has taken on a life of its own since its humble beginnings as a 40th birthday present for Wayne Yakich.

Back in 1998, when Wayne had no gray hair and Gordo actually still had any hair at all, Wayne's wife was "kind" enough to ask Gordo what Wayne would want for his 40th birthday. Unselfishly, Gordo suggested a golf trip with his friends Steve Poole, Mike Heaney and himself to Myrtle Beach, and Cathy agreed. The four Founders landed in Myrtle Beach and spent a weekend at Pawley's Plantation (oblivious to the fact that everything worthwhile doing happened 30 miles north in the city). The trip was a smashing success, despite the threat of a rainout of the first round at Legends that the bagpipe player chased away, and the Founders decided the weekend was too good to keep to themselves.

The next year, six more golfers were added and Final Fore truly got its start, complete with a two-team Ryder Cup format, green jacket for the winning captain and the first visit to Derriere's (fully stocked cooler and all). Final Fore celebrated the millennium by expanding to 16, and each year since, Joe Palumberi and Tom Reardon have led 12-16 golfers in a Ryder Cup formatted event like no other. Beyond the Founders, there have been the reliables - Dave Williams and Joe Palumberi - and the one-hit wonders - Dave Marvel, Big Jim McGrath and Scott Sniffen, to name a few. And the event has not been without controversy - the infamous "Ted Tie" of 2001 marred an otherwise enjoyable weekend.

But Final Fore is and always will be about the golf and the camaraderie - every year in the first week of April. Spots are limited and at a premium. Those who have gone always come back, except those who inadvertently hit the talk button on their cell phone and unknowingly place a call to their wife while recounting the previous night's experiences at the gentlemen's club to the other guys. Those guys never come back.
